About
A guide to the best lawyers, city by city
Separate guides for each legal problem in each city, built from what firms actually say about themselves.
Top Lawyer USA publishes curated guides to lawyers by city and practice area. Every firm gets its own profile with its office, phone number and focus. We are not a law firm, we do not give legal advice, and we do not refer cases.
Why we built it
Finding a lawyer is one of the higher-stakes searches anyone makes, usually on a bad day. Most results are lead-generation sites that sell your enquiry to whoever pays, or lists that name firms with no explanation of why.
We wanted something plainer: one page per problem per city, with real firms, their real phone numbers, what each one actually focuses on, and how to check a lawyer yourself before you sign anything.
Who it's for
- People who have just been hurt, charged, served or fired and need a shortlist today
- Families planning ahead for an estate, a move or an aging parent
- Founders and small businesses looking for a lawyer they can afford
- Anyone who wants a second opinion on a firm they've already found
What's in every guide
The format is deliberately consistent, so once you've read one you know exactly where to look in the next.
- A short answer up top, if you only read one paragraph
- A comparison table of every firm, with its office and focus
- How we chose, including what we did not check
- Each firm's office, phone number, website and map link
- Who each firm suits, and one practical thing to know before you call
- Local rules worth knowing, with links to official sources
- How to check a lawyer's license and find free legal help
How a guide comes together
-
01
Pick the city and the practice area
We work down the legal problems people search for most in each city, starting with injury, divorce, criminal defense and immigration.
-
02
Build the shortlist
We gather candidates from firms' own sites and public sources, then read each firm's website directly to confirm it is operating, where its office is and what it handles. A firm that doesn't clearly do this work doesn't make the list.
-
03
Write it up
We describe what each firm says it focuses on and who that suits, and add local rules from official sources. We do not repeat advertised verdicts or claim to have tested anyone.
-
04
Keep it current
Firms move, merge and change direction. Each guide shows the month it was last updated, and corrections from anyone, including the firms themselves, are free.
What we don't do
We do not give legal advice. Nothing on this site creates an attorney-client relationship, and rules and deadlines depend on your facts, so talk to a licensed lawyer about your situation.
We have not interviewed clients or tested these lawyers, and we have not reviewed each lawyer's disciplinary record. Before you hire anyone, look them up in the state's official lawyer search. We link it on every guide. In Illinois, for example, it's the ARDC.
"Best" on this site is our editorial opinion about focus and fit. It is not a statement about the outcome of any case, and it is not a certification.
Common questions
What is Top Lawyer USA?
A guide to lawyers, built one city and one practice area at a time. We publish lists like the best car accident lawyers in Chicago or the best divorce lawyers in Chicago, and every firm on a list has its own profile page.
How do you choose the firms?
We start from what each firm says on its own website: that it is operating, where its office is, and that it handles this kind of case. We then choose a mix that gives readers real options. We do not rank by verdict size, settlement amount, fee or advertising. Each guide explains this in a section called How we chose.
Are you a law firm? Can you give me legal advice?
No. Top Lawyer USA is not a law firm, does not give legal advice, and does not refer cases. Reading this site or contacting a firm listed here does not create an attorney-client relationship.
Have you checked every lawyer's license and record?
No, and you should. We list firms, and licenses belong to individual lawyers. Before hiring anyone, look up that person in the state's official lawyer search, which we link on every guide. We link it on every guide.
Do firms pay to be listed?
No firm has paid to appear on any guide today. If we ever carry a paid placement, it will say "Paid placement" on the entry itself. Corrections are always free: see for law firms.
How often are the guides updated?
Each guide shows the month it was last updated. Firms move, merge and change focus, so always confirm details with the firm before you rely on them.
Spotted something wrong?
A firm that's moved, a detail that's changed, a firm we've missed. Tell us and we'll take a look.
